Overlooking a mountain, Tikal ("Place of votes" in Mayan) is one of the most important of the Maya sites. The Tikal National Park was established in May 1955, and in 1979 the UNESCO declared Cultural Heritage of Humanity. This place is a marvel of nature and culture.
For the record, George Lucas came here turn "Star Wars" (Star Wars Episode IV), it may be he who advised his compatriot and colleague Francis Ford Coppola, to install its third resort La Lancha on the shores of Lake Petén Itzá.
History of Tikal
Built in the fourth century BC, the city was at its peak between the III and IX centuries. We were able to observe the constructions which indicate a great cultural, artistic, urban, mathematical, astronomical, agricultural and commercial.
It housed among other peasants, artisans and slaves. In the central acropolis, there were family houses, with steam baths, golf ball games, marketplaces and water channels.
The city of Tikal was a ceremonial center where the rites were intended to allow for good harvests. And from the traces that archaeologists have been able to decipher, its people were often at war. In 1848 the site was officially recognized.

If everything was updated, you could almost get lost in the hundreds of buildings ... At the moment you can see it:
Large spaces including the main square which is the center of gravity for the city reflects millennia of work around it.
6 temples on pyramids with 6 floors:
- The Temple of the Great Jaguar 45m high, was built in 700 to be the tomb of the Governor Ah Cacao
- The temple of the mask measures 38m and was designed to receive the remains of another governor (Ah Cacao)
- The temple of the high priest stands at 50m and was built in 810 It contains an original lintel carved in wood, whose central character is dressed in a jaguar skin
- The temple of the two-headed snake 65m is the highest building Tikal. It dates from 470.
- Another temple south of the central acropolis is 57m high and date 750
- The temple inscriptions contains a longest hieroglyphic text of Tikal which mentions the 766 day.
You can not miss the twin pyramids: the two truncated pyramids with stairways on each side, east and west of the square.
3 places were called Acropolis, places where you can observe ceremonial structures, residential or administrative nature, with multiple rooms and multiple levels like palaces "Tromentoso Cielo" (Heaven tormented), "Maler", or the five floors.
